Photo Elaine Brodie. | One of the Most Innovative Artists Working in North America Today Gord Peteran: Furniture Meets Its Maker JANUARY 10 - MARCH 1 2009 Subversive, Funny, Sinister. Adjectives not normally used when describing furniture. But these are exactly the words one could use to describe the works of Canadian furniture maker, Gord Peteran. It is furniture unlike any other. A table that doesn't hold objects, chairs not made for sitting, objects that appear to function as torture devices or for the sexually experimental. Despite the dubious functionality of many of the pieces in the exhibition, one can recognize, using Peteran’s word, the “furnitural” quality of the object. Toronto-based Peteran has launched a boundary-crossing career, opening up the category of furniture to an unprecedented range of psychological and conceptual content. Sometimes his means are disarmingly simple: his work A Table Made of Wood is cobbled together from scraps on his workshop floor. At other times he utilizes craftsmanship of the highest order, as in 100, a precisely machined table that disassembles into a carrying case like that used for a rifle. In all cases, Peteran’s work addresses the traditional role of furniture while at the same time subverting it. ![]() Sounding 2008 Collaboration with Donald Fortesque & Lawrence LaBianca Steel, rocks, polycarbonate, zipties, sound 10’ x 4’ x 8 | Also showing will be Donald Fortescue: Genius Loci JANUARY 10 - MARCH 1 2009 Also showing will be “Donald Fortescue: Genius Loci,” an exhibition of works begun in 2000, based on the artist’s research into 17th- and 18th-century collectors and curiosity cabinets. In Australasia during the 19th century, this tradition evolved into the creation of display cabinets that showcased natural materials discovered in the New World while exemplifying Old World craftsmanship and expertise. The cabinets also often included surveyor and navigator’s tools, biologist’s collecting boxes, and early cameras. Fortescue’s pieces feature traditional handcrafted components made from locally specific materials paired with new-media components such as digital images, embedded video, and manipulated sound. All closely reference their place of creation. Just like their predecessors, these modern works play on the nostalgia for the old and the seduction of the new. Donald Fortescue is an Australian born and educated artist. He has exhibited internationally, and was one of the first artists to receive the Experimental Design Award from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, where he mounted a one-person exhibition in 2001. His most recent bodies of work include sculptures that draw on design and craft techniques.
