Art Book Exploration: Working with Amate Bark Papers with Rhiannon Alpers

February 24, 2018
11am to 4pm

Inspired by SVMA’s concurrent exhibition Libros de Artista, notably accomplished San Francisco book artist Rhiannon Alpers will guide participants in an exploration of the beautiful textures and colors of Mexican Amate paper.  This ancient paper dates back to pre-Columbian and Meso-American times and is still made by hand to create beautiful surfaces and textures that are equally interesting to handle.

The visually layered surfaces of paper are soft, colorful, and strong, lending a unique touch to these books.  Using provided bark papers, alongside other papers, students will learn laminating techniques for their pieces before binding.  Utilizing a non-adhesive long stitch binding technique, where the text block is sewn directly through the cover material, presents potential for endless variety.

SVMA Members: $95

General Public: $110
