Persona and Poetry: Writing Workshop with Jodi Hottel

May 9, 2013
May 16, 2013
5:30–7 pm

In conjunction with the museum's exhibition Roger Shimomura: Minidoka on My Mind, Jodi Hottel will offer a two-part writing workshop, using Shimomura’s imagery as a touchstone.

In the first session, participants will read and discuss examples of persona writing and have an opportunity to write in the gallery. The second session will introduce several forms of Japanese poetry: haiku, tanka and haibun. Once again, there will be time to try these forms using the art in the exhibition as inspiration. Then Jodi will suggest ways of melding these two different techniques.  No prior writing experience is required.

Jodi Hottel's writing has been published in Nimrod International, Spillway, Naugatuck Review, Touch, English Journal and anthologies from the University of Iowa Press, Tebot Bach, and the Healdsburg Arts Council. Her mother’s family was “interned” at Heart Mountain, Wyoming, which is her principal motivation for telling these stories. Her chapbook of poems about the internment, Heart Mountain, was winner of the 2012 Blue Light Press Poetry Prize.
