Delicious Images: Joseph Goldyne in conversation with Kate Eilertsen

October 24, 2013

Recognized as one of the most creative and energetic contemporary California artists, Joseph Goldyne was honored in 2001 with a retrospective of his work at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. In Delicious Images, Goldyne employs food subjects principally as a way to commune with and pay tribute to admired painters of the past, Whistler and Picasso to name but two. The contemporary sandwich seemed the answer as it was not, itself, an archaic subject but it could incorporate ingredients and passages of color to echo the presumed culinary palette and compositional preferences of his chosen older masters. Thus, Goldyne’s sandwich paintings are a way of "nourishing himself" through the memory of revered historical mentors. Goldyne talks with SVMA executive director Kate Eilertsen about the long and sometimes surprising history of food as the subject for art.
