Kara Walker and Kerry James Marshall are the focus of this fall’s seminar. Both have roots in California and are past winners of the MacArthur Foundation’s “Genius” Award. With their work, Walker and Marshall challenge stereotypes of African American life, bringing painting into the socio-political arena.
