Position:        Art Rewards The Student (A.R.T.S.) Teaching Artist

                        (seasonal, part-time contractor)

Reports to:  Director of Education and Public Programs



A.R.T.S. Teaching Artists are responsible for developing lesson plans and providing instruction in Sonoma elementary school classrooms at the 4th- and 5th-grade levels.  Teaching artists also attend meetings with Museum staff, participate in and occasionally lead professional development workshops, and assist with the installation of the annual A.R.T.S. exhibition at SVMA.

A.R.T.S. planning meetings begin Fall, 2014, and teaching in the classroom begins January 2015.


  • Participate in all A.R.T.S. planning meetings (2-3) and training workshops (1-2)
  • Develop lesson plans for each classroom project that conform to the California State Visual Art Framework; as well as integrate with Common Core state standards.
  • Submits lesson plans in writing to the Museum’s education department.
  • Provide 4-8 hours of art instruction in each of your assigned 4th- and 5th-grade classrooms. Teaching artists can have anywhere from 1-4 assignments, totaling 8 to 24 hours of classroom time.
  • Participate in your assigned classrooms’ Museum visits, by conducting an art lesson in the Museum’s studio classroom.
  • Complete written evaluation for each assigned classroom
  • Assist with installation and de-installation of A.R.T.S. exhibition at SVMA, in May and June.



  • At least 3 years experience teaching art in a formal, elementary classroom setting; comfortable working with 30+ students at one time.
  • Proficient with a variety of art media and techniques appropriate for 4th- and 5th-grade students. Basic knowledge of (western) art history a big plus.
  • Must enjoy working with children (experience with ages 9-12 desired) and adults
  • Attention to detail and meeting deadlines. Excellent organizational skills/personable communication (+ phone and email) with classroom teachers, school principals, museum staff and fellow teaching artists.
  • Ability to be proactive and flexible, especially when coordinating schedules with classroom teachers.  
  • On occasion, assist fellow teaching artists when needed.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish a huge plus, but not required.


About A.R.T.S.:

Initiated in 2000, A.R.T.S. is the Museum's longest-running education program that places teaching artists in 4th- and 5th-grade classrooms throughout Sonoma Valley at no cost to the schools, serving approximately 750-800 students. Currently, the program is funded primarily through two foundation grants: The Community Foundation, Sonoma County and the Sonoma Plein Air Foundation, with additional funds from individual and corporate donors. In addition to the work in their classrooms, students also make visits to the Museum, engaging in highly interactive gallery tours art projects in the studio classroom. In the spring, SVMA presents a major exhibition of student work, designed for installation alongside the main gallery exhibition that inspired it. 

For the 2014-2015 school year, A.R.T.S. projects will connect to the exhibition Unconventional and Unexpected: American Quilts Below the Radar, 1950-2000, which is on view at SVMA from February 14 through May 16, 2015. An exhibition of the students’ work will be added in mid April and run concurrently with Unconventional and Unexpected through May 16, 2015.
