Sonoma, CA:  Once upon a time,  at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, the iconaclastic British artist David Hockney unveiled an idea: why should fairy tales be just for children? The result: Six Tales from the Brothers Grimm: Original Etchings by David Hockney came to live, if not happily ever ever, at least from June 4 – August 28, 2011. A special members' preview will be held on Friday, June 3, 6pm – 8pm. . . .

Pirated music and its methods of distribution reveal a form of cultural resistance in Sonido Pirata, the new exhibition opening September 17, 2011 at Sonoma Valley Museum of Art. Sonido Pirata is an exhibition exploring sound, memory and cultural history through the phenomenon of pirated music. Working with video, music, performance, sculpture and installation, the artists create new sound and visual landscapes. . . .

Innovation is a keystone of Sonoma County’s arts scene and the new exhibition at Sonoma Valley Museum of Art showcases five artists who live and work in the county. Artist books are all the rage this summer at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art and it shows in the Museum’s new series of  Studio Workshops for Youth. Students age 6 and over can take part in a number of workshops centered around book binding, printmaking, storytelling, illustration, drawing and sculpture, all inspired by the Museum’s summer exhibitions, Six Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm: Original Etchings by David Hockney and Rebound: A Survey of Contemporary California Book Art which run June 4 through August 28. . . .

Sonoma artist Anne Pincus offers a five-part painting class at Sonoma Valley Museum of Art this fall. “The Lessons of Modernism,” carries over the themes offered in the Museum’s fall art history series taught by Ann Wiklund. The painting class starts Wednesday, November 2, and continues November 9, 16 & December 7 and 14. The class runs 6:30–9:00 pm each session. . . .

This winter, the Sonoma Valley will host a clan of colorful characters—a winter witch, a band of goblins, one bright raven, and some unexpected residents of an enchanted forest—all coming to life in front of a roaring fire. SVMA Unveils The Stanley Abercrombie and Paul Vieyra Art Library

The Sonoma Valley Museum of Art is set to open a reference library of approximately 2,500 volumes on artists and exhibitions donated by Stanley Abercrombie and Paul Vieyra. Both are Charter Members of the Museum, which was founded in 1998, and have served extensively on the Museum’s Board and advisory committees through the years. . . .
